Safe Drinking Water through Pond Sand Filters (PSFs)
Partner name:Mutual Trust Bank
Start date:March 2025
Location: Bagerhat, Bangladesh
Summary:Pond Sand Filters (PSFs) are a proven, low-cost water purification technology specifically designed for coastal and saline-affected areas. They purify pond water by filtering it through layers of sand and gravel, effectively removing contaminants and reducing salinity. This community-managed solution provides sustainable access to safe drinking water, particularly for marginalized populations.
Bagerhat, a coastal district in Bangladesh, faces a severe shortage of safe drinking water due to rising salinity levels caused by climate change and seawater intrusion. The situation intensifies during the dry season, forcing residents to rely on unsafe and often contaminated water sources. Existing government interventions are limited, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable, locally managed solutions.
Location: Gazipur and Satkhira Coastal Region, Bangladesh
Summary: This project aims to engage youth and local communities in climate action through school sessions, quiz competitions, plastic market events, and tree plantation activities. By raising awareness and encouraging dialogue, the initiative seeks to reduce plastic use and promote sustainable living. Targeting students and community members, it fosters collective responsibility and empowers youth to lead environmental action in their communities.
