Safe Drinking Water through Pond Sand Filters (PSFs)

Safe Drinking Water through Pond Sand Filters (PSFs)

Partner name: Mutual Trust Bank

Start date: March 2025

Location: Bagerhat, Bangladesh

Summary: Pond Sand Filters (PSFs) are a proven, low-cost water purification technology specifically designed for coastal and saline-affected areas. They purify pond water by filtering it through layers of sand and gravel, effectively removing contaminants and reducing salinity. This community-managed solution provides sustainable access to safe drinking water, particularly for marginalized populations.

Bagerhat, a coastal district in Bangladesh, faces a severe shortage of safe drinking water due to rising salinity levels caused by climate change and seawater intrusion. The situation intensifies during the dry season, forcing residents to rely on unsafe and often contaminated water sources. Existing government interventions are limited, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable, locally managed solutions.

Reclaiming Civic Space through Dialogue & Citizen Journalism

Partner name: The Asia Foundation and FCDO

Start date: October 2025

Location: Bangladesh- National scope with regional inclusivity, focusing on diverse urban and rural communities.

Summary: This initiative seeks to reclaim and strengthen civic space in Bangladesh by fostering inclusive dialogue and empowering citizens to tell their own stories through ethical, fact-based journalism. Implemented by the youth-led organization Lal Sabuj Society (LSS), the project integrates debates, townhalls and citizen journalism training under the Lal Sabuj Prokash digital media platform.

Through a combination of civic townhalls, public debates and a structured storytelling lab, the project will engage over 200 participants- including youth, women and marginalized groups- to build their skills in media literacy, digital safety and ethical reporting. By producing and amplifying citizen-led stories on governance, climate justice and social accountability, the initiative aims to counter misinformation and rebuild trust in democratic dialogue.

The Lal Sabuj Prokash platform will serve as both a broadcast and publishing hub-connecting grassroots voices with national narratives. Beyond the project period, this digital civic media hub will continue to operate as a safe and inclusive space for open discussion, fact-based storytelling and active citizenship- strengthening Bangladesh’s culture of dialogue, trust and participation.
