
A town hall meeting on “Waste Management Measures” was held in Barishal on Thursday, 27 November, at 10 a.m. at the Euro Convention Hall. The event was organized by Lal Sabuj Society with support from The Asia Foundation and funding from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
The session was presided over by representatives of Lal Sabuj Society. Ahsan Habib, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Barishal, attended the event as the chief guest. Among the special guests were Mahbub Alam, Assistant Director of the Barishal City Corporation Sanitation Department; Abu Said Musa, District Chief Coordinator of the Central Party; Zia Uddin Sikdar, Member Secretary of Barishal Metropolitan BNP; Professor Mohammad Hossain Dulal, Naib Amir of Barishal Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami; Rafiqul Islam Rasel, Central Organizational Secretary of Ganadhikar Parishad; and Dr. Mizanur Rahman, Member Secretary of Barishal Civil Society.
Speakers at the meeting discussed the existing waste management challenges in Barishal, the rising volume of waste due to rapid urbanization, and the harmful impacts on public health, the environment, and climate. They highlighted the need for waste segregation systems, recycling practices, increased manpower and resources for the city corporation, public participation, and joint initiatives between local authorities and citizens.
Teachers, local leaders, university students, city residents, representatives of various government and non-government institutions, and members of civil society were also present at the event and shared their recommendations.
