Rehabilitation of non-functional PSF (Pond Sand Filters) in Sharankhola under the initiative of Lal Sabuj Society.

The shortage of safe drinking water has long been a critical issue in the Sharankhola Upazila of Bagerhat district. Due to salinity and water pollution, people were often forced to walk miles or rent vehicles to collect water for daily use. Many could not even afford that, and as a result, had to rely on the salty river water or contaminated pond water. This posed serious health risks, especially for children and women, increasing the likelihood of waterborne diseases.

In response to this crisis, in 12,13 & 14 March 2025, Lal Sabuj Society took the initiative to rehabilitate three non-functional Pond Sand Filters (PSF) in the Chalitabunia and Sharankhola unions one in Chalitabunia and two in Sharankhola.

The entire project was carried out with the active participation of the Lal Sabuj Society’s Sharankhola team and the local community. The initiative was led by Lal Sabuj Society’s Executive Members Mostakima Rahman Binita and Naim Sikder.

As a result of this restoration, approximately 300 families now have access to safe and clean water every day. Women’s daily burden has been reduced, children face fewer health risks, and overall, the quality of life in the community has improved significantly.

This initiative is not just a water supply project it stands as a powerful example of youth-led action, leadership, and community participation in solving local problems.
