To mark the International Day of the Girl Child, Lal Sabuj Society organized a participatory activity in Bhola under the Space to Lead project, engaging schoolgirls in identifying safe and unsafe areas in their community.
The activity was held on 11 October at Nalini Das Secondary Girls’ School in Bhola Sadar. With support from Lal Sabuj Society volunteers, students reviewed a map of Bhola Sadar and identified different locations as safe, moderately risky, or risky based on their daily experiences and movement around the area.
Through this participatory mapping exercise, the girls shared where they feel safe, where they experience safety concerns, and which locations require greater attention and improved safety measures. The activity created a platform for them to express their experiences, concerns, and perspectives regarding safety in their community.
Based on the girls’ input, a safety map was prepared and later submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Bhola. This helped bring the girls’ real-life experiences and safety concerns directly to the attention of the local administration.
The initiative aimed to amplify girls’ voices, encourage them to participate in discussions about their own safety, and promote greater awareness among relevant stakeholders about creating safer and more girl-friendly communities.
Through the Space to Lead project, Lal Sabuj Society continues to create opportunities for girls to understand their rights, express their perspectives, and participate meaningfully in issues that affect their lives and communities.
