To strengthen the foundation of a democratic society and raise awareness of civic rights among young people, an awareness session was held at the University of Global Village (UGV) in Barishal. This special event, titled ‘Civic Rights and Debate Practice’, took place on Thursday at 10:00 AM in the university’s third building, with spontaneous participation from students.
The session was organized by Lal Shobuj Society with the support of the Asia Foundation and funding from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). Its main objective was to educate the younger generation about their fundamental rights and responsibilities and to encourage leadership development.
Guest speakers at the session included Ziaul Haque, Head of the English Department at UGV and Momena Sifa Rumki, Project Officer at Lal Shobuj Society. Also present were advisors and members of the UGV Debate Club.
The session began with a speech by Ziaul Haque, who addressed the students: “It is essential for everyone to be aware of the fundamental rights of the people. Freedom of expression, the right to protest and the protection of civic rights form the foundation of a democratic society.”
Adnan Shakur, moderator of the UGV Debate Club, highlighted the essential role of debate practice in advocating for civic rights. He said, “The Debate Club helps students express opinions, analyze issues and develop leadership skills. Youth participation can pave the way for positive social change.”
Students actively participated in the session, engaging in open discussions on civic duties, leadership and social responsibility. The organizing body, Lal Shobuj Society, stated that through regular events like this, their main goal is to shape young people into responsible, aware and leadership-oriented citizens.
