A town hall meeting titled “Actions Needed to Ensure Road Safety” was held on Wednesday, 17 December at the Euro Convention Hall in Barishal, bringing together students, citizens, and representatives from government, civil society, and the transport sector. The event was organized by Lal Sabuj Society, with support from The Asia Foundation and funding from the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
The discussion focused on key issues such as preventing road accidents, enforcing traffic laws, ensuring safety for pedestrians and vehicle users, improving public transport systems, and raising public awareness. Speakers emphasized that while government action is crucial, responsible behavior by citizens is equally vital in reducing accidents and fatalities. They also highlighted the importance of identifying accident-prone areas and implementing community-driven awareness initiatives.
Distinguished participants included Barishal City Corporation Executive Magistrate Raihanuzzaman, ASP Ratan Chandra of Barishal Traffic Police, Advocate Abul Kalam Shahin, Professor Mahmud Hossain Dulal, Nurul Huda Milu Chowdhury, Dr. Manisha Chakraborty, Rafiqul Islam Russel, along with officials from Barishal City Corporation, teachers, youth representatives, journalists, and civil society members.
Organizers stressed that road safety is a collective responsibility, not just an infrastructure challenge. Recommendations from the discussion will be submitted to relevant policymakers, and Lal Sabuj Society reaffirmed its commitment to continue efforts in promoting road safety, citizen awareness, and responsible civic behavior.
